Hmm so this past week I forgot to blog i think so I think this may have to be extra long to count as two.
Anyway, recently I have begun to analyze the artistic side of movies more. Not just the style but also the transitions and other such things that help to contribute to art in motion. It is pretty fantastic what professionals do with angles and these transitions to create one fluid piece of work.
On another note, ASTRO BOY IS BEING MADE INTO A 3D MOVIE! Words cannot express the jubilation I feel. As one of the first anime cartoons created it has been an inspiration to almost all manga, anime, and other animated films. I can't wait to see what the do to this as the trailer already looks fantastic. GO YOUTUBE IT or...
WATCH IT HERE:

I think this is a great look at how artistic design can interact with film in order to have a stylistic and artsy look. While it is no Waking Life, it is still going to be a pretty amazing movie.
As far as my flash project goes. I am greatly looking forward to being able to work on my idea. It is simple in the story, but what it will basically cover will be my friends and I on a road trip to Lake Monroe where we will be kite flying. From here (without giving away too much plot) the kite will be lost and we will be on a journey to find it.
OOoo intriguing right? Chicka yeah boi.

Flash
Well, I'm thinking for my Flash animation I will create a project based on the adventures of me and my friend's crazy "adventures"
This will of course be either a road trip or kite flying in the park.

Tomorrow is THE BIG DAY
So this project is due tomorrow, the webart project I mean. That's not so bad, I'm almost finished but still. Looking forward to seeing how everyone's turns out, I've really had no experience working with code, dreamweaver or any other type of web software stuff so this is kind of an experience I guess.
Woot SPRING BREAK! No woot to the end of it. :(

Progress
I'm starting to understand more and more the idea behind net.art. Just from what I am working on now it seems like it is an alright project and it is definitely informative. My theme is sort of "everybody eats" and right now it is very loose and unorganized so I'm thinking of redoing a few pages and cleaning up the act.
Once I get a bit further I'll post a link. Happy editing and creating in the meantime!

net.art
I'm still very confused about the idea of net.art. I think it is a novel idea, but at the same time it has not been executed in a very great way. The few examples I did see of web art were very random and not very well proposed.
What I'm really confused about in particular is what tools we can use for this project. Is it video, photoshop drawings, sound?
With this in particular I think I would like to implement sound by remixing some of my music (so that it voids copyright huzzah) and then maybe dealing with an idea that is cyclical. I have an odd idea on religion and general ideas after life, so I want to play with those.

FREE WEEK!
Huzzahhhh! The end of another week (or technically the beginning since this is Sunday). So, all three of my photoshop projects are now complete which is awesome and all I have to do now is begin the cd writing process.
Update number 1 DONE.
Secondly, I went to this really sweet Zulu art exhibit in the art museum this weekend (it was the opening reception) and holy cow the Zulu people knew how to throw down!!!! At least in the art sense. Statues and other three-dimensional works were among my favorites, ESPECIALLY THE MASKS!!!
Regardless, it was a slow weekend for art besides working on my final copy of my self portrait "Unwrap Yourself and Bloom"(I'll explain the title when I post the picture) and other homework.
Happy Critique to everyone tomorrow!

I forgot...
Art Informel, Cubism and Mondrian and Modglianian Art

ABSTRACTION IS AWESOME
In the past I was never really into abstract art but in this past year alone I have become increasingly fascinated by everything abstraction can achieve. From emotions to imagination the art of abstraction really requires more thought than simply moving pieces of an object around. The message portrayed by that act is almost too simplistic that it is unimportant.
Above I have listed art from Martin Jansen, Piet Mondrian, Wols, and Pablo Picasso. Each has a different form of abstraction and each manages uniqueness.
To begin, Mondrian's Red Tree is not much of an abstraction in terms of shape but in terms of color and style it definitely is. It interacts with the background simply by contrasting with the cool unnatural blues. Layering brush strokes is also a great way to achieve the effect.
Moving on, Picasso's Femme En Pleurs above utilizes a range of geometric shapes and colors to fulfill abstraction. In a more interesting way than man of his predecessors in my opinion. The style he uses allows for a great range of emotion to be felt. They also usually tell a great story. Guernica for example is a great story told through cold colors and blocky portraits. In Femme En Pleurs there is an especially poignant spot that is monotonous pointing towards emphasis on the woman's mouth.
The next painting probably my favorite of this batch, Wols' Blue Phantom is just great. It runs with the idea of Art Informel. The use of colors and the vagueness of his shape lead to endless interpretation. The colors mesh well together creating a sort of conversation with each other going back and forth back and forth.
Martin Jansen uses an abstraction of the human figure for his subjects but really makes use of his imagination to either create within the subject a new sense of motion (through use of varying shapes and fluid objects within) or by creating surroundings that seem surreal. His work above, One Second has multiple figures though they are disguised in color, tell an interesting story of oppression I think.

The Deadline
Well, I'm almost completely finished with my digital composite and I'm really excited for the self portraits we are going to be doing for the class. Call me narcissistic but I love playing with images of myself, it's so much fun.
I'll be posting once again tomorrow when my project is finished so I can actually put the piece on here. I will probably filter it after I turn it in or make another copy so that I can play with it and present it on this site too.
In other news, photoshop can be really helpful for minor things. I have been using it for freaking ever I swear and I'm really excited to use it in the business place and just for flyers for local events, shows and favors. I took so much time away from it because of other school stuff (lame) that getting back to it is sort of inspiring me.
Random ranting aside, I bid everyone adieu until next post.

The tremendous rage caused by EBAY auto-bid
Well, as far as supporting materials for my project go, I don't really know what that means. Therefore, I'll try to best explain what my project is going to be. I once did something sort of like this in high school, but the project I am working on is a "nightmare" where I am eating multiple miniature versions of myself. Usually I hate working within this realm of digital art because I am not really big into digital realism. When I create digital art I love to abstract things and create art that is much harder to recognize as a simple portrait or other type of simple manipulation. That said, what my piece will include is about 3 versions of myself, one will be holding a giant fork about the size of my body. the other will be being held by my larger body and another will probably just be running away. I plan on this being a somewhat high contrast piece because I want it to be a bit more edgy that just having a sort of bland look. Also after it has been formally graded I will most likely play around with it with filters and morphing tools.
All that aside, my title comes from the immense dissatisfaction I feel for EBAY. For all those using auto-bid and e-snipe, I hate you. Probably the most ridiculous way to cheat ever.

My introduction
Hellloooo. I'm Dion Hazelbaker, a sophomore majoring in studio art and journalism and in my second year at Indiana University. I have a somewhat vague idea of what I want to do in life, but its not concrete because...well because that would be boring. I want to tour the world and see what life throws at me so whether its good or bad I can say I have experienced it. Whether or not I will follow art as a career path I have no idea, I really am only majoring in art at IU because I have always been interested (you should see my Dragon Ball and Power Ranger drawings from when I was little). With my semi-history laid out, the real purposes of this blog are both for personal and class use, as I believe blogging is a good way to evaluate some of my own thoughts and it is required for my digital art class, D210.
I can't pin down a single all-powerful inspiration or influence, at least not one that is solely responsible for influencing me. However some of the things that do inspire me and my art are:
Myself (my image)
Music
Movies
News
Religion
Family
Cartoons, Anime, Television
Games
War
Disease
Emotions
Simplicity
What drives me is simply my innate thirst for creativity and dare I say it, boredom. In my opinion, artists so often fall into the realm of a certain standard that it is hard to access the creativity they contain. In my case, I do not want to avoid the standards whether it includes just sticking to one medium, one style or one size. I am an avid believer of change and the idea that experiencing new things will lead you in a new direction to help one become a different artist or person. As for the boredom, I often find myself at my computer bored out of my mind, and rather than always draw, I figure working with photoshop, 3ds Max and a variety of other programs is more worth my time.
I'm very much a believer in the "good guy" coming out on top idea and optimistic. I think in most cases my art reflects my ideology. However, I do enjoy sometimes a darker type of art, a more urban art some prefer to call it, focusing on shadows, the human figure and modern day clothing and technology. Also I am especially interested in adding an element of fantasy to my art. Realism is almost never my goal. I think the reproducing a light-bulb is great and all, but if I wanted to see one I would go to the nearest Walmart to pick up a pack. It's great that people have the talent to reproduce objects on paper, stone, etc, but what I want to do is create a representation of the object in a new form, whether it includes waving the contour a bit to create a more cartoony feel, or placing it in a unique composition with an interesting subject. Too much emphasis is put in recreating an object instead of customizing an object so that it becomes your own.
Heading back to the inspirations, I want to post a few quotes and/or links pertinent to what I was trying to get at and thought provoking (at least when you hear them in context).
Music:
Emiliana Torrini: Beggar's Prayer
(link may go to the bottom on the screen)
I think there's a great deal of sadness and truth to this song and it gives me this feeling that, you know life happens, sadness is apart of it and you have to cope. In this way I think it inspires and reminds me of past events which may or may not be useful in portraying something in art.
Movies: What Dreams May Come. One of the most gorgeous movies of all time. I don't know how it couldn't inspire someone to want to work hard and hope to achieve a level of artistry equal to that of its creators.
Two quotes from the novel The Alchemist:
"What's the world's greatest lie?... It's this: that at a certain point in our lives, we lose control of what's happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate."
"We are afraid of losing what we have, whether it's our life or our possessions and property. But this fear evaporates when we understand that our life stories and the history of the world were written by the same hand."
Finally, something that contributes to my "super uber geekiness", I think this more than anything inspires me to create because I am amazed at what other people have learned to do with technology.
It's ridiculously gorgeous 3D animation and it combines a dark theme with an interesting style.
